■ 전시소개, Introduction
한국 전쟁 이후 둘러진 한강 하구 철책과 군사경계선을 지닌 경기도 김포시, 아르메니아 제노사이드와 디아스포라의 역사를 가진 미국 캘리포니아 글렌데일시, 두 자매 도시는 ‘국경, 선, 경계(Border)’의 문제를 도시의 트라우마(trauma)로 상속된 기억(inherited memory)을 공유하고 있습니다.
대한민국 경기도 김포시와 미국 캘리포니아주 글렌데일시는 2010년 자매도시 결연을 맺고, 지속적인 인적 교류를 실시해 왔습니다. 특별히 글렌데일시는 2013년 7월 30일 미국에서 첫 번째 ‘평화의 소녀상’을 세운 도시로, 국경을 넘어, 평화와 인권이라는 인류 보편의 문제를 ‘우리의 문제’로 함께 지지하고 있습니다. 한강 하구의 평화적 이용이라는 과제를 두고 있는 김포와 글렌데일시, 두 자매도시는 인권과 평화의 바탕 위에 두 도시 간의 보편적 연대와 성찰, 예술과 표현을 통하여 상호 이해 증진을 이루고자 합니다.
이번 교류 프로그램의 소재인 ‘한강, 프리존’은 한반도를 남북으로 가로지르는 내륙의 DMZ와는 달리 강으로 나누어진 남북의 경계와 구역을 지칭하는 표현으로, 대한민국 수도 서울을 가로지르는 한강이 남북을 바로 마주하며 서쪽 바다와 만나는 구역을 의미합니다. 한강은 1953년 정전협정에서 민간 선박의 항행이 가능한 자유항행구역(Free Shipping Area)으로 약속되었지만 여전히 군사적 제한으로 인하여 이용할 수 없는 강으로, 도시는 ‘강을 잃고, 경계에 둘러 싸여’ 수 천 년 강과 함께 살아온 문화와 역사, 기억을 점차 잃어버리고 있습니다.
본 교류 전시는 김포아트빌리지 아트센터와 글렌데일 리플렉트 스페이스에서 양 지역의 작가 교류를 포함해 공동 개최가 예정되어 있었으나, 코로나로 인하여 김포문화재단의 가상전시관과 리플렉트 스페이스 가상전시관을 통하여 온라인-비대면 전시로 전환하게 되었습니다. 이번 전시는 김포와 글렌데일, 두 자매 도시 간 본격적인 문화예술교류의 시작입니다. 김포의 이야기 다음, 글렌데일의 이야기를 통하여 양 도시의 시민들이 서로를 더욱 이해하고, ‘경계와 국경에 대한 탐구, 인권과 평화의 표현’에 함께 하는 작가들의 참여로 확장되기를 소망합니다.
Gimpo City, Gyeonggi having a barbed wire fence around the Estuary of Han River and military border built after the Korean War and Glendale, California with the history of Armenian genocide and diaspora are the two sister cities, sharing inherited memory of the issue of 'Border, Line, Boundary' as trauma of the cities.
The city of Gimpo, Gyeonggi-do, Korea, and the city of Glendale, California, USA, formed a sister city relationship in 2010 and have been conducting continuous human exchange. In particular, Glendale is the city that established the first “Peace Girl Award” on July 30, 2013. This crosses borders and supports the universal issue of peace and human rights as 'our problem'. The two sister cities, the city of Gimpo and Glendale, which have the task of peaceful use of the Han River Estuary, aim to promote mutual understanding through universal solidarity and reflection, art, and expression between the two cities based on human rights and peace. 'Han River, Free Zone', the subject of this exchange program, is an expression that refers to the borders and zones of the north and south divided by rivers, unlike the inland DMZ that crosses the Korean peninsula from north to south. It refers to the area where the Han River crossing Seoul, the capital of Korea, faces north and south and meets the western sea. It was designated as a Free Shipping Area where sailing of private vessels was allowed in the ceasefire agreement in 1953, but it remains as an off-limit area due to military control and the city lost ‘the river and is gradually losing the history and the memory of living together’ with the river.
This exchange exhibition was scheduled to be held jointly at the Gimpo Art Village Art Center and the Glendale Reflect Space, including exchanges of artists from both regions, but due to the COVID-19, it is online through the Virtual Exhibition Hall of the Gimpo Cultural Foundation and the Virtual Exhibition Hall of the Reflect Space. It was converted to a non-face-to-face exhibition. The exhibition marks the beginning of a full-scale cultural and artistic exchange between the two sister cities, Gimpo and Glendale. Following the story of Gimpo, I hope that through Glendale's story, the citizens of both cities will better understand each other and expand to the participation of artists who work together in 'exploration of borders and borders, expression of human rights and peace.‘

강의 끝자락

고향이라는 것은 공간의 넓이라기보다는 질료다. 화강암이거나 흙이요, 바람이거나 가뭄이요. 물이거나 빛인 것이다.

김포는 지리적 위치상 북한과 인접해 있다. 그리고 김포에는 한강하구를 프리존(Free Zone)으로 지정한 지역이 있다. 김포의 강물은 소리 없이 북한으로 향하고 있다. 물리적 힘이 아닌 자연스럽게 북한으로 흘러가는 강물을 보며, 여러 생각이 든다. 이 강물은 어떤 의미를 주고 있는가. 그리고 현재 우리는 코로나 바이러스로부터 우울, 비난, 초조, 슬픔, 수용 등을 감당하고 있다. 오직 눈으로 ‘보고’, 오직 눈으로 ‘소통’을 요구하는 지금. 과거로부터 흘러온 강물 속에 현재는 어떤 것을 비추고 있는지 알고 싶다는 생각이 든다.
이번 전시는 ‘강의 흐름’ 속에 담겨진 이야기를 전제로 하였다. 우리의 긴 역사에는 여전히 가슴 아픈 흔적의 그림자가 강물처럼 흐르고 있다. 이런 강에 깊숙이 침식된 역사의 흔적을 들어 올려 현재 당면하고 있는 문제와 비교하여 어떤 표현들이 시각예술에 내재하고 있는지를 살펴보려한다. 그리고 강물이 국경을 넘나들듯이, 시각예술로 김포시와 글렌데일시의 교류를 갖고자 한다. 김포시는 글렌데일시와 2010년도 자매결연 하여 현재까지도 양 도시간의 연대를 강화해 왔다. 이를 보다 지속하고 유지하기 위한 일환으로 본 전시를 기획하게 되었다.
이 전시는 김포에 흐르고 있는 강의 흔적을 쫓아, 강이 비추고 있는 현 위치를 시각예술에서 살펴보고자 한다. 그리고 이를 통해 앞으로 나아가야 할 예술의 방향성을 모색해 보려한다. 접촉이 불가피한 현 시점에 맞추어 비대면 온라인 전시로 구성하였다. 참여 작가는 홍선웅, 한요한, 이동용, 김희선, 신이피, 이수진 6명의 다양한 매체와 함께 하였다.
먼저 홍선웅 작가는 판화가로 이번 전시에서는 새로운 방식의 판화를 시도하였다. 작품<시암리 초소(Siam-ri guard post)>는 판화에 애니메이션 기법을 접목하여 미디어적 감각을 보여주고 있다. 이를 위해 미디어 아티스트 한요한 작가와 협업하였다. 조각가 이동용작가의 <출입금지(No Trespassing)>는 비디오 영상작업이다. 이 작품은 작가가 늘 접하고 보았던 강에 ‘강의 흐름’과 ‘시각의 흐름’, 그리고 ‘속도의 흐름’의 동시성을 개념적으로 풀어낸 작품이다. 김희선작가의 <강 (The River)>은 김포의 조강에 대한 이야기를 애니메이션 영상으로 보여주고 있다. 이 작품은 김희선작가가 직접 감독한 작품으로 여러 곳에 수상한 경력이 있다. 신이피작가의 <죽은 산의 냉철한 새 #01(A cold bird on the dead mountain #01)> 작업은 김포가 신도시로 개발되며 변해버린 생태적 변화에 관련된 미디어 작품이다. 그리고 이수진 작가의 <저 끝 가장자리 메아리(an Echo at the Edge)>는 김포의 현실적 문제인 접경지역이 갖고 있는 모습과 그것을 더욱 확장하여 분단국가의 현실적 문제를 다큐멘터리 영상으로 구성한 작품이다. 이들은 모두 김포가 담고 있는 강에 얽힌 이야기를 비롯해 김포의 역사, 정치, 생태, 문화 등 다양한 논점을 다루고 있다.

Gimpo is geographical location close to North Korea. Also, there is an area that has designated the Han River estuary as a Free Zone. The river in Gimpo is silently heading towards North Korea. The river is naturally flowing; it is not physical flowing. From that I have many thoughts. What does this river mean to us? And now, we are dealing with depression, criticism, anxiety, sadness, acceptance, etc. These days, only the eyes require reporting and only ‘eye communication’. In the river flowing from the past, to know what reflects in the present.
This exhibition presupposes the story contained in the ‘flow of the river'. In our long history, the shadows of heartbreaking traces still flow like a river. So in the exhibition will show what expressions are inherent in the visual arts by comparing them with the current problems. And just as a river crosses a border, visual art seeks to have an exchange between the city of Gimpo and Glendale. In 2010 the city of Gimpo formed a sisterhood relationship with the city of Glendale. It has strengthened the solidarity between the two cities. The exhibition plans as a part to more sustain and maintains two cities.
The exhibition seeks to examine the current location of the river in visual art, following the traces of the river flowing in Gimpo. And through this, to be tried to find the direction of art that needs to move forward. It is organized as an online exhibition according to the present time when contact is inevitable. Participating artists are Seonwung Hong, Yohan Han, Dong-Yong Lee, Heeseon Kim, Ifie Shin, and Jade Sujin LEE with various media.
First of all, to introduce the work of Seonwung Hong, he is a printmaker. In this exhibition, he tried a new way of printmaking work. So he collaborated with media artist Yohan Han. The work Siam-ri guard post shows a media art, which is combining with animation techniques with printmaking. Sculptor Dong-Young Lee is showing a video work No Trespassing. It is a video of a river that the artist has always encountered and seen. The work has a conceptual aspect with the synchronicity of 'flow of river' 'flow of visual', and 'flow of speed'. Artist Heeseon Kim's The River shows the story of Jo-gang(river) in Gimpo. It is an animation. She directed the work and it has received several awards. Ifie Sin's A cold bird on the dead mountain #01 is media work. It is about the ecological change that Gimpo developed into a new city. Also, Jade Sujin Lee's work an Echo at the Edge is a work composed of documentary images of the real problem of Gimpo, the border area, and the real problem of the divided country by expanding it further. They all deal with various issues such as the history, politics, ecology, and culture of Gimpo, including Gimpo's river.
